Starting a new activity can feel exciting and a little intimidating for kids and parents alike. At Aikido of Park Slope, we make sure every child feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn from day one. With our Fall 2025 semester beginning Saturday, September 6, here is exactly what you and your child can expect in their very first martial arts class in Brooklyn.

Getting Comfortable with the Basics of Aikido in Brooklyn

Children begin by learning the foundations of Aikido:

  • Basic stance and simple movements to feel balanced and grounded.

  • Partner work where older students help new ones learn in a safe and friendly way.

  • How to roll and fall safely, a skill that builds body awareness, coordination, and confidence.

Families in Park Slope, Gowanus, and Prospect Heights often notice their children quickly developing better posture and focus after just a few weeks.

A Supportive Class Structure

Most kids martial arts classes at APS follow a consistent flow:

  • Gentle warm-ups to stretch and center attention.

  • Instructor demonstrations of Aikido techniques, followed by guided partner practice.

  • Time for games and movement activities that reinforce lessons in a fun way.

This mix of structure and play keeps children engaged while teaching them discipline and cooperation.

What to Bring and Wear

If your child doesn’t have a uniform yet, don’t worry, comfy clothes like a t-shirt and workout pants are perfect. A water bottle is recommended, and classes are practiced barefoot. Everything is designed to keep kids comfortable and ready to move.

A Welcoming Martial Arts Community in Park Slope

Our dojo, located in Gowanus near Carroll Gardens and Downtown Brooklyn, is known for its warm and supportive environment. Older students model dojo etiquette, instructors give plenty of guidance, and kids are encouraged to ask questions. Everyone remembers what it was like to be new, and the culture is built on respect and kindness.

Progress Happens Step by Step

Aikido is a journey, not a race. Children may feel clumsy at first, but every class builds on the last. With consistency, parents quickly see improvements in focus, confidence, and physical ability along with the joy of being part of a community.
