Taiko Masala is an independent Japanese Taiko drumming group and a resident partner at our dojo.

RESIDENT PARTNER

Taiko Masala

at Aikido of Park Slope

Our dojo is proud to be the Brooklyn home of Taiko Masala, a Japanese Taiko drumming group led by master drummer Hiro Kurashima. It is a natural partnership: two Japanese traditions, both built on discipline, focus, and community, sharing one space. The public is welcome to watch performances, and anyone can sign up for classes.

THE THUNDER DRUMMING TROUPE

Power, precision, and ensemble rhythm.

Taiko Masala has thrilled audiences across the United States with the traditional art of Taiko. Blending the discipline of Japanese martial arts with the power of complex ensemble rhythms, the troupe delivers visually stunning performances.

Their handmade drums range from small hand-held instruments to towering five-foot barrels, including the giant 250-pound O-daiko, and traditional instruments such as the Shakuhachi, Fue, and Koto, along with dance, add richness to their programs.

WEEKLY CLASSES IN PARK SLOPE

All ages, all levels welcome.

Complete beginners through experienced performers are welcome, of all ages and backgrounds.

FOUNDER

Hiro Kurashima

SUWA-STYLE MASTER DRUMMER

Hiro Kurashima is a Suwa-style master drummer and the founder of the New York Suwa Taiko Association. Inspired by Grand Master Daihachi Oguchi, who helped introduce ensemble Taiko to audiences worldwide, Hiro formed Taiko Masala in 2001.

Based in Brooklyn, the group's mission is to share the joy of Taiko with as many people as possible through performance and education.

OPEN HOUSES & COMMUNITY SHOWCASES

Come hear it in person.

Aikido of Park Slope and Taiko Masala host regular open houses that introduce neighbors to the resonance of Taiko, highlight beginner-friendly pathways, and welcome the community into the dojo.

Open houses typically include demonstrations, mini lessons, and a chance to ask the instructors questions.

READY TO TRY TAIKO?

A full-body practice in rhythm and focus.

Taiko is a welcoming, beginner-friendly practice: a full-body workout that develops rhythm, focus, and team connection, with clear instruction on stance, striking, timing, and ensemble awareness, grounded in respect for the Suwa-style tradition.
