A Powerful New Partnership in Park Slope

Aikido of Park Slope is thrilled to welcome Taiko Masala, Brooklyn’s premier Japanese drumming ensemble led by Master Hiro Kurashima. Known for their breathtaking performances and deep cultural roots, Taiko Masala brings a new sound and spirit to our dojo, one that perfectly complements the discipline, rhythm, and mindfulness at the heart of Aikido.

Through this collaboration, Aikido of Park Slope continues to expand its mission to foster connection, culture, and community. Together, we’re building a space where movement and music unite.

What Is Taiko?

Taiko is the traditional art of Japanese drumming, a full-body practice that combines rhythm, movement, and focus. Originating centuries ago in Japan, Taiko has evolved into an ensemble performance that’s both powerful and meditative.

Under the guidance of Master Drummer Hiro Kurashima, students learn the foundations of Suwa-style Taiko, from dynamic striking techniques to group coordination and timing. Every beat channels strength, teamwork, and joy.

Classes for All Levels

Taiko Masala offers weekly classes every Saturday from 3:00–6:00 PM at Aikido of Park Slope.

One Saturday each month features an extended class from 3:00–7:00 PM for those who wish to dive deeper into technique and ensemble performance.

These classes are open to complete beginners as well as experienced drummers. You’ll develop rhythm, endurance, and focus while experiencing the deep cultural resonance of this art form.

Community Open Houses and Performances

In addition to regular classes, Aikido of Park Slope and Taiko Masala will host community-wide open houses where visitors can experience Taiko’s incredible energy up close. These events are open to the public and are the perfect introduction to both Taiko and our dojo.

If you’ve ever wanted to feel the ground shake beneath your feet or discover a creative new outlet for focus and movement, you’ll love these showcases.

Meet Master Drummer Hiro Kurashima

Taiko Masala was founded in 2001 by Hiro Kurashima, a Suwa-style Master Drummer and the Founder of the New York Suwa Taiko Association. His teacher, Grand Master Daihachi Oguchi, was the pioneer of modern ensemble Taiko drumming and dedicated his life to spreading its joy around the world.

Today, Hiro continues that tradition here in Brooklyn, leading Taiko Masala with the same passion, precision, and community spirit that defines the art itself.

Join the Rhythm

The partnership between Aikido of Park Slope and Taiko Masala is about more than music. It’s about movement, mindfulness, and connection. Just as Aikido channels harmony through motion, Taiko turns rhythm into energy and joy.

Classes are open now, and everyone is welcome.
