A Gentle Guide to Starting Your Practice

If you received the gift of Aikido this holiday season, welcome. You have been given more than classes or a membership. You have been given time for yourself, space to breathe, and an opportunity to grow at your own pace.

If you are feeling excited, curious, or even a little unsure about when or how to begin, that is completely normal. This guide is here to help you take the first step with confidence and ease.

You Don’t Have to Wait Until January

Many people assume they should wait until the new year to start something new. The truth is, the holiday season can be one of the best times to begin Aikido.

Classes tend to be calmer and more intimate. There is less pressure, more room to ask questions, and a slower rhythm that allows you to settle in comfortably.

Starting now means you arrive in January already familiar with the space, the people, and the practice.

What Your First Class Will Feel Like

Your first class is about orientation, not performance. You will be guided through basic movements, partner practice, and simple techniques at a pace that feels supportive and manageable.

Everyone on the mat remembers what it was like to start. There is no expectation to know anything ahead of time. Showing up is enough.

What to Wear and What to Bring

You do not need a uniform to begin. Comfortable clothes you can move in are perfect. A long sleeve shirt and athletic pants work well. A water bottle is helpful, and Aikido is practiced barefoot.

More importantly, bring curiosity and patience with yourself. Progress in Aikido is gradual, and that is part of the beauty of the practice.

It’s Okay to Start Slow

Some people jump in right away. Others take a class, pause, and return when it feels right. There is no correct timeline.

Aikido is not about pushing or proving. It is about listening, adjusting, and building consistency over time. One class a week is a wonderful place to begin.

A Place to Reset During a Busy Season

The holidays can be joyful and overwhelming all at once. The dojo offers a quiet, focused space where the noise of the season falls away.

Many students find that training during this time helps them feel more grounded, calm, and centered. It becomes a small anchor in an otherwise full calendar.

You Are Welcome Here
