Starting Martial Arts from Scratch? Why Aikido Is the Perfect First Step
If you’ve ever thought about learning a martial art but worried you might be “too new” to start, we have good news — Aikido is one of the best martial arts for complete beginners. At Aikido of Park Slope, we meet every student exactly where they are, whether you’ve been curious about martial arts for years or just decided today to give it a try.
We know stepping onto the mat for the first time can feel intimidating. That’s why we’ve created an environment where kindness, patience, and respect guide every class. Beginners aren’t just welcome here — they’re essential to the life of the dojo.
Why Aikido Is One of the Best Martial Arts for Beginners
Unlike some martial arts that focus on competition or physical dominance, Aikido is about blending with energy, staying centered, and working in harmony with your partner. You don’t need prior experience, a certain body type, or peak physical fitness to begin. You’ll learn at a pace that’s right for you, with experienced students who remember exactly what it’s like to be new.
One of the most beautiful things about Aikido is that learning is a two-way street. Senior students often discover new insights while training with beginners. It is a win-win for everyone. Beginners are nevery a "burden" at our dojo.
What to Expect in Your First Aikido Class in Brooklyn
Warm Welcome: You’ll be met with patience and guidance from instructors and fellow students.
Simple Gear: Wear comfortable sweatpants and a long-sleeved shirt you can move in. We train barefoot, so no special footwear required.
Gentle Warm-Up: Class starts with stretches and movements to focus your mind and prepare your body.
Technique Practice: The instructor will demonstrate a movement, and you’ll try it with a partner at a comfortable speed.
Basic Stance & Ukemi: You’ll learn your first stance right away, and depending on your comfort level, you may even start practicing safe rolling and falling (ukemi) on day one.
Training with Partners: How Beginners Learn in Aikido
In Aikido, we train with partners from the very beginning. You’ll be paired thoughtfully so you can work with someone who will help you feel comfortable while keeping training safe. Adjustments to speed, intensity, and complexity are made to suit your level.
How Quickly Will You Improve as a New Aikido Student?
Improvement happens quickly in small moments. Maybe your balance feels steadier, or a movement “clicks” for the first time. Those moments can be addictive in the best way. If you can make it to class 2–3 times a week, you’ll start building skills and confidence before you know it.
The Dojo Community: Why Beginners Thrive at Aikido of Park Slope
Our dojo is rooted in respect, mindfulness, and shared learning. You won’t be expected to memorize etiquette on day one. We’ll walk you through it, step by step.
You’ll find people of all ages and backgrounds training together, each with their own Aikido journey.
