As families in Brooklyn prepare for the start of the school year on Thursday, September 4, 2025, parents are making final decisions about after school activities. With so many options available, from team sports to dance to academic programs, it can feel overwhelming to choose the right fit. If you are looking for an activity that balances physical fitness, focus, discipline, and community, Aikido is the perfect choice.

A Martial Art That Stands Apart

Unlike karate or taekwondo, which emphasize striking and competition, or jiu jitsu, which focuses on grappling and submissions, Aikido is a non competitive martial art. Students learn how to redirect energy, practice safe falling, and work in harmony with partners. The focus is not on winning but on cooperation, self improvement, and peaceful conflict resolution.

Benefits Parents See at Aikido of Park Slope

Parents in Park Slope, Gowanus, Prospect Heights, and nearby neighborhoods consistently share the same feedback: Aikido helps their children thrive both on and off the mat.

Top benefits include:

  • Greater focus and attention in school

  • Improved self confidence and self respect

  • Physical coordination, balance, and stamina

  • Tools for handling conflict calmly

  • A sense of belonging in a supportive community

A Supportive Environment for Every Child

Our kids and teens program serves ages 6 to 17, with the option for exceptionally focused 4 and 5 year olds to join. Classes are structured but fun, blending technique with games that develop both body and mind. Shy children often build confidence quickly, while active kids find healthy new ways to channel their energy. Older students are encouraged to mentor younger ones, teaching responsibility and reinforcing dojo values.

What Parents Are Saying

Here is what one parent recently shared about their family’s experience:

“Amazing team. They build children's character holistically. They genuinely care. They have created a wonderful atmosphere of love, care, strength, and resilience. Highly recommend!”
